Math Class Projects

Mr. Shelley's Math Catapults

On April 3 and 4, Mr. Shelley's Math Topics 6 students designed some catapults given a list of usable materials.  The night of April 4, Mr. Shelley built them ALL according the the design specs provided by the students.  On April 5, the students tested their designs, made modifications, and then collected data on the angle of projection in order to predict distance.  On April 6, Mr. Shelley's class launched racquetballs at Mrs. Tuma's Math students.  Points were awarded based on accuracy, and whether or not they could hit Mrs. Tuma for double points.

Mrs. Tuma's Math Topics Class

...try their hands at gathering data in order to determine the best angle of projection to optimize distance, while shooting a ping-pong ball with a cross-bow like launcher.

Exponential Functions

Students in Mr. Shelley's Math Topics 5 class used exponential functions to construct pan flutes and guitars.  They performed an interesting rendition of Jingle Bells for the office staff on December 19th.

Testalations

In November, a few of Mr. Shelley's Math Topics 6 students decided to spruce up the ceiling with some ceiling tile art in the form of testalations - a mathmatical form of art made famous by MC Esher.

Game Theory and Design

On October 27th, students in Mr. Shelley's Math Topics 4 class used their newfound knowledge of game theory, probability and statictics to design some board games.

Real Life Parabolas

September 20th, Mr. Shelley's students experimented with distance, acceleration and gravity as they relate to quadratic functions.
