Apache Trail High School

In just their second season of 8-man tackle football The Apache Trail Wolfpack won the State Title.  ATHS participated in the Arizona Charter Athletic Association (AzCAA) and was seeded #2 entering the State Playoff Tournament.  After the Championship game the Wolfpack finished with an overall record of 11-1 and avenged their only loss by taking home the Championship Trophy. 

Just like the previous week's play-off game against Mohave Accelerated (Bullhead City), it came down to one final play as the last few seconds ticked off the clock.  Last week with 8 seconds left the Wolfpack 'D' blocked a 3-point field goal attempt to win 44-42 just to qualify for the State Championship game.  This time with only 6 seconds on the clock and Heritage Academy (Mesa) on the Apache Trail 5-yard line, it all came down to one play.  One play for the glory, one play for a championship.  The Wolfpack defense sacked the Heritage quarterback and made a 'stop' that will last a lifetime in the memories of the players and most fans in attendance.  That was just one of the many tense moments at Saturday's game, nothing came easy for these young men.  Every yard and every point was hard fought . Whether the team was trailing or the score tied, this Wolfpack never gave up, never was satisfied.

The Wolfpack offense showed a balanced attack with four different players scoring touchdowns. Jordan Viramontes scored on a pass reception.  Ryan Golden ran in a second score and Jon Bohn hauled in a long touchdown pass and accelerated away from a defender to reach the end zone.  Apache Trail quarterback, Brian Mayfield led the offense and scored the game's final 8 points. He took the ball around the right end on a keeper and dove into the corner of the end zone to tie the score 26-26 with 1:30 left on the clock. The next play he powered up the middle for a 2-point conversion to put Apache Trail up for good 28-26.
